Before You Begin

Make sure you have enough boxes and packing materials (newspaper, bubble-wrap, packing tape etc.)

It is always better to get more boxes than you think you are going to need because invariably people don’t realise how much stuff they have until it comes to packing!

Take some time to sort through your possessions as you pack and have a good clear out, putting to one side anything that you no longer need.

You will be surprised what you find at the back of cupboards!

Items can be boxed up and given to charity shops where appropriate or thrown away if they are broken or damaged.

Start early – packing always takes longer than you expect!

Packing Advice

Pack an essentials box for the first move which should include items such as the following: coffee, tea, milk, snacks, cups, kettle, plates, utensils, basic house-hold cleaning items, bin liners, light bulbs, torch, screwdriver, hammer, toilet roll, soap, shampoo, toothbrush/paste, a basic first-aid kit and a hand towel – all these you will need immediately to hand regardless of how quick you plan to unpack!

Pack one room at a time, keeping the boxes together and labelling each with the room details and basic contents – this will make sorting the boxes and unpacking at the other end so much easier.

Clearly mark fragile boxes and do not stack heavier boxes on top of them.

Tape the bottom of boxes well to prevent them collapsing when lifted.

Do not use packing tape directly on polished or painted wood surfaces, as it will leave a sticky mark/residue and may damage the surface when you remove it.

Always pack heavy items (such as books etc.) into several smaller boxes rather than one large box which will then be too heavy to lift – fill larger boxes with smaller or lighter items.

Clothes can be packed into wardrobe boxes or suitcases/strong shopping bags which can always be used to fill gaps in the van.

If you are using wardrobe boxes you can fill the space the bottom with light items or loose clothes/jackets/shoes etc.

When disassembling any items of furniture put any associated nuts/bolts/screws etc. into a small freezer bag and tape it to the item.

Where possible pack any electrical items/appliances in their original boxes but if you did not keep them, pack them into boxes with suitable padding and all related cables.

If you have an item such a television with multiple cables attached it is a good idea to take a photo (taking a picture on your phone is perfect as you have instant access to it later) so you can see how the cables need to be reattached when unpacking and setting it up at the other end.
