Moving home is considered one of the most stressful things a person can go through in their lifetime. Even if you are moving from a tiny room to the house of your dreams it is still a stressful experience; disruption of routine, packing and unpacking and adjusting to a new area can all add their pressures. Yet thousands of people move home every day. Ever wondered who is moving, why they’re moving or where they are moving to? If so, then these fun facts should help a bit:
WHO?:
- On average, two and three-bedroom property owners move home the most. More than 50% of household removals in 2014 were from 2-3 bedroom homes.
- Nowadays, the average person will move house 8 times in their lifetime, with approximately 6 years between moves.
- People will move twice before they turn 18, before living in another three different houses during their twenties.
WHY?:
- The most common reason to move was to get away from parents, with a quarter moving to go to university, while 34 per cent moved in with their partner.
- Lifestyle is a key factor in moving – covering everything from retirement, a change in income or circumstances, or a desire for a less stressful, more laid-back pace of life by moving for example to a more rural area.
- Another very popular reason cited is to be closer to shops and amenities, followed closely by moving to be nearer to family and friends.
WHEN?:
- August is the busiest month for removal companies. Almost every 6th move happens during August. And, nearly 50% of all moves occur from August to November. February and March are the least preferred months for relocation.
- Most people chose Friday or Saturday as a moving day. Sunday is a less popular choice, but will often be used when big moves need to spread throughout the weekend.
WHERE?:
- Most people stay true to their local area will not end up too far from where they started, travelling up to 32 miles during each move and finally living in a house that is within 63 miles of where they began.
- Just one in five people end up living 200 miles or more away from where their first house was located.
